It’s not hard to envision a world in which we look back on capital punishment the way we now look back on torture.
This quote is interesting for a number of reasons.
- At the moment it seems like people are looking back on torture through increasingly fond, or at least understanding, eyes. This is not what Saletan means, but hey, in for a penny, in for a pound.
- ‘Not hard to envision’? I should fucking hope not. All you need to do to envision it is to look at the following map, and visit any country not depicted in red.
You’ll notice that the red parts are a conglomeration of the places in the world where life exists largely in a Hobbesian State of Nature. This is the zone where life is Nasty, Brutish and Short. Oh, and for some reason the USA and Japan are in there too.
Must be some kind of mix-up.
