The first time I fell in love, really in love, was with a girl.
The second time was with The Larry Sanders Show. It remains one of the great loves of my life.
In lieu of attempting to explain why, and in the process running off several paragraphs about comedy in general that I probably shouldn’t be willing to commit to, I leave you with this episode, which to me is one of the greats in the 90 or so total episodes in the series run. The final season, as a whole, is what I always refer back to as the best TV I’ve known.
For the record, the actual title of the episode is “The Interview”.
Everyone, but EVERYONE was astoundingly good in that show, but for me nobody surpasses Rip Torn’s Artie. He’s the man for whom the phrase ‘Magnificent Bastard’ was coined.
If you’ve never seen the show, Artie is one part Jack Donaghey from 30 Rock, One Part Ari from Entourage, baked in an oven of no-bullshit manliness and then slathered in awesome sauce.
Jeffrey Tambor is mindblowing as Hank, and probably does a better job of inhabiting a character than you ever get to see for such a long time, but Rip Torn makes Artie the guy you want to be when you’re 60.
Everyone, but EVERYONE...astoundingly good...nobody...
