Lillie was in her mid-20s then and according to mission historian Monica Cronin, went on to live a suitably passionate life, residing with a wealthy married man for years until his estranged wife died — whereupon she married him herself. Lillie Duncan died in 1985 and her collection of love notes is part of a treasure trove of archival documents that Cronin is sorting through. Many were found recently in boxes under the old stage where the musicians would play for the mission dances.
