Maybe it’s my small-r republican attitude, but I will truly never understand monarchy. Remind me why I should bow to someone who’s important solely because of the family into which he or she was born?
Because under the system we have (which was effectively ratified by referendum) she is Queen of Australia. In the same way that you salute a rank, not a person, when you curtsey or bow to the Queen, you actually show your respect for the State.
What I can’t understand is why people are so blind to the semiotics of this. Curtsey or don’t, but don’t pretend to not understand what the gesture means.
