A few months back, we picked Erin’s youngest brother up from the airport. Eighteen years old he was, and he had never left the United States. The first thing that he noticed was different about Australia (or that he mentioned to me) was the news. He’d heard more world news on the radio on the 45-minute drive from the airport to our apartment than I think he’d heard in the previous year.

America’s great. America’s wonderful. It’s also somewhat inwards-looking. I have high hopes that things like the new visa classes that allow young Americans to travel and work abroad will do a great deal to change this. The rest of the West has for a long time understood America. It would be good if America took the time to get to know us.
