During the second world war, to cut aircraft losses, physicists at the operational research section of Bomber Command examined the design and performance of the Lancaster bomber and concluded that the gun turrets were heavy and aerodynamically unsatisfactory. Without gunners and gun turrets the bomber would have gained an extra 50mph, and become more manoeuvrable, and many lives might have been saved. The recommendation was ignored.
