The fine motor skills in my right hand are still terrible, and in fact they’re getting worse. I’ve had to focus a great deal on keeping my business running, and that’s meant I simply haven’t had the time and attention to spend the hours per day of physiotherapy that I’m meant to.

This isn’t a post about how my hand is doing. It’s a post about something else.

I’ve watched the iOS 7 launch this week and I’ve seen the discussions designers have been having about fine details of icons, line weights, and translucency. And I realised that I am very happy that I can’t do detailed design any more.

Not being able to draw or use a stylus or a mouse with any level of fidelity frees me up from having to agonise over line weights, typefaces, colours, and the correct number of teeth on an icon that looks like a sprocket

It’s not like I’ve been a regular pixel pusher in recent years anyway, but now knowing that I can’t do that stuff at the level expected of an expert is liberating.

Other people can worry about ‘what it looks like’. I’m free to work on ‘what it does’.
